Locum Consultants Acting as Supervisors for Trainees

Please note the guidance from HEE regarding Locum Consultants acting as supervisors of trainee doctors:

  1. Locum Consultants should not act as named Educational Supervisors
  2. Locum Consultants may act as named Clinical Supervisors if:
  • They are contracted for a minimum of 3 months, and this specific role is in their contract.
  • They are able to demonstrate the appropriate evidence against the 5 educational domains as for substantive consultants.
  • They are appraised for this role as part of an annual appraisal process as for substantive consultants which is recorded through Intrepid and its successors with an appraisers GMC number.
  • Postgraduate schools will have specific requirements for approval of Clinical Supervisors relating to the delivery of the clinical curriculum, as well as supporting a trainee’s development in leadership and professionalism. These must be met.

Clearly locum Consultants may be able to provide day to day supervision and training for trainees if this is felt to be appropriate. In order to ensure continuity within the programme, whenever locums are providing training this must be shared with substantive consultants including named supervisors. This can be locally arranged.

CT2 Year ACCS- Anaesthetics Trainees to be Managed by the Core Anaesthesia TPD’s With Effect From Current Training Year August 2016

Dear ACCS Anaesthesia CT2 Trainees

With effect from the commencement date of your current CT2 year in ACCS- Anaesthetics (August 2016) it has been agreed amongst Dr Khalid Hasan (Chair of ACCS) and the Core Anaesthetic Training Programme Directors (TPDs) that your training will now be managed by the Core Anaesthesia TPDs.

In practice this will mean your Core Anaesthesia TPD will also assess you at ARCP. Should you have training queries that your Educational supervisor/College Tutors are unable to support you on, you will be able to then approach your Anaesthesia TPD for support. If you have any further queries in relation to this please contact your Core Anaesthesia TPD via email.

Your Core Trainee TPD is Dr. C.J. De Klerk        email: chris.deklerk@sath.nhs.uk

Reflective Practice

Dear Trainees

The importance of reflective practice in your e-portfolio is already well known.

NB!! Please be aware that all notes on reflection should be anonymised and not contain any patient identifiable information.

Your notes on reflective practice should never be used as evidence or a report for a case you were involved in. Such specific information should be kept separately if needed. The aim of reflective practice is to review one’s practice and prompt further learning.

NEW: OSCE Spotlight videos on RCoA Website

Dear All

The College is pleased to present a new series of OSCE ‘spotlight’ videos.  There are seven videos in this spotlight series:  History, Communication, Physical examination, Technical Skills, Interactive Resuscitation, Equipment check and a demonstration of a station that uses a touch screen computer, ‘the unmanned station’.

Each video provides advice on what a candidate should expect to find when they enter the station.  The video then moves on to demonstrate satisfactory and non-satisfactory performance of a particular scenario and concludes with a reminder of the standard rules.

An OSCE run through video which provides an overview of the exam is also available, this is ideal viewing for candidates sitting the OSCE for the first time.  The videos are available on the College website and can be viewed on the following link:
