There have been a number of commendations given to trainees since the excellence awards went live.
Remember to reward those that have done an exemplary piece of work or simply gone the extra mile.

The RCoA have published guidance to help understand the extension of time available to gain the Final FRCA, 6 months into ST5
This can be found on the Structure of the rotations page of the website
We are aware that there are trainees of all grades demonstrating exemplary behaviour within the school. More often than not, this goes unrecognised. We have introduced the Stoke School Excellence Awards so that trainees may be rewarded for such behaviour. A trainee may be recommended for an award by anyone from Consultants, other trainees, allied health professionals and support staff. Please follow the link on the website and complete the form if you would like to recognise someone’s excellence.
Dear all,
The College has published some Frequently Asked Questions relating to the newly GMC-approved Perioperative Medicine modules of the CCT in Anaesthetics, which are available here:
https://www.rcoa.ac.uk/periopmed/news
The College will continue to develop these so if you have any further questions, please email training@rcoa.ac.uk
Best wishes,
John
The RCoA has gained approval from the GMC to extend the time to gain the Final FRCA.
For trainees commencing Intermediate Training in August 2016, you will have 30 months to gain the Final FRCA. This means if you fail to complete the FRCA by the end of ST4 you will be able to commence ST5 training. This will give you 1 more attempt at the Final FRCA. If you are still unsuccessful after this attempt you will require an extension to your training according to the rules set out in the Gold Guide.
If you started Intermediate training before August 2016 then you will not be given this extra 6 months and will need to complete the Final FRCA by the end of ST4, as before.
I am pleased to announce that Dr William Rea has been appointed Regional Advisor for Pain Medicine for the West Midlands.
His email address is williamrea@nhs.net should you need to contact him for any help or guidance regarding Pain Training. His contact details are also available on the website contact page.
The Stoke School would like to thank Dr Helga Funkel for all her efforts as RAPM for West Midlands for the last six years.
The latest Advanced level guidebook is now available on the Workbooks page of the website.
Although Advanced training is fairly bespoke, aimed at gaining mastery in the subspecialities, some guidance is useful. Certain sub-specialities will have individualised, comprehensive requirements supplied at the time of the module. For guidance on the others please refer to the latest Guidebook.
Regards
John Dyer
Please note that the College require a couple of WPBA’s in addition to ALS/APLS/EPLS courses to complete this module.
Please refer to you guidebook/workbook relevant to your level of training to find out your requirements.
Regards
JD & CDK
The new workbooks have been updated to include the new Perioperative Medicine modules, mandatory at all levels of training.
The Core Level workbook has been available on the website for a few weeks.
The Intermediate and Higher Workbooks are available as of today.
See the Workbooks page of the website to download

The GMC has confirmed approval for the next iteration of the 2010 Anaesthetics CCT Curriculum. This will take effect from 3rd August 2016.
Version 1.7 of the 2010 curriculum is now available on the RCoA website
It reflects the changes outlined in the annual summary of changes submitted to the GMC.
The following changes are included:
To support the introduction of the perioperative medicine (PoM) units of training, the following implementation plan has been agreed.
Trainees and trainers should implement this unit of training when trainees commence their next respective level of training (i.e. intermediate, higher);
· CT1 Core unit from August 2016
· ST3 Intermediate unit from August 2016
· ST5 Higher unit from 2016
· ST6/7 Advanced unit from 2016
The PoM units can be optional for CT2 and ST4 trainees in 2016, as these trainees will commence their mandatory units when they progress to their next training level i.e. ST3/5 in 2017.
As soon as the e-portfolio has been updated to include the Perioperative Medicine units of training, the workbooks will be updated for the trainees starting CT1, ST3 and ST5 this August.
Kind Regards
John Dyer and Chris De Klerk
