Improving Feedback and Reflection to Improve Learning
The Academy of Medical Royal Colleges Assessment Committee has produced guidance on Improving Feedback and Reflection to Improve Learning: A practical guide for trainees and trainers. This practical guide has been developed and agreed across all Colleges via assessment leads. This can be a really helpful guide to use to facilitate reflective practice.
You can find this on the Academy website via the following link:
Anaesthetic Fellowships Worldwide
If you are interested in an Anaesthetic Fellowship either as an OOP or a post CCT fellowship somewhere else in the world then there is a fantastic resource available to you. It is continually evolving and updating so take a look by clicking the link.
Details can be found on this website in the OOP page
ICM Dual Trainees – Extension to Training Guidance
The college has just released new guidance regarding extensions to training time for Dual Anaesthetic/ICM trainees.
Essentially if you require an extension in one of the specialities you have to remain in that speciality until the issue is resolved. You can’t switch to the other speciality.
See the full guidance here: Remedial time for dual trainees
Or read the link on the website: extensions to training time
ACCS Trainees ARCP Information
Please note a new ARCP Checklist is available on the updated ACCS ARCP Requirements Webpage of the SSA Website:
ARCP Checklists and Information
ACCS Anaesthetic Trainees will find a new easy to use ARCP Checklist available for use in preparation for their ARCP. This checklist has been generated using the required criteria from both the ACCS and Anaesthesia ARCP Checklists.
Please Note: There are no changes to the HEWM ARCP Checklist for ACCS Acute Medicine and ACCS Emergency Medicine Trainees and you are advised to continue using the existing Checklist. Click on the above link for more details.
Advanced Paeds
Higher/Advanced Paeds Trainees
The curriculum is designed around a spiral learning approach whereby you should complete your Higher Paeds before emabarking on 6 months Advanced Paeds.
For some time we have accomodated signing off Higher and Advanced Paeds within a 6 month placement at BCH, where training time has been tight. This will no longer be possible!
The college has become very strict with their requirement to have a full 12 months of time attributed to Advanced training. This includes a full 6 months for Advanced Paeds. So within a 6 month placement for advanced paeds at BCH it will not be possible to attribute time to higher paeds.
What if you already have Higher and Advanced signed off in only 6 months?
Make an appointment to see me and we can come up with a plan. This may involve a top up period of time ranging from 1-3 months at either UHNM or NX. Alternatively you may be able to assign an appropriate period of training to higher or advanced paeds to make up the shortfall.
Kind regards
John Dyer
Guidance on ‘Trauma and Stabilisation’ Module Sign-Off
Hello all
Trauma and stabilisation is intended to be delivered over the course of a whole training period (basic, intermediate, higher or advanced). I understand, and expect, therefore that this means I’ll be busy with requests for module completion forms in the run up to ARCPs.
Paperwork
– I suggest making an entry in your logbook (under miscellaneous) for all trauma calls you attend whether they happen at Stoke or in the trauma units that are in the rotation. This will allow you to record supervision, airway management and procedures. In the ‘operation’ field I suggest writing Trauma call – (type of injuries / destination, e.g. ED only / theatre / IR / ICU).
– WPBAs required are outlined in the trainee workbooks
Trauma courses
The intermediate workbook requires ATLS or equivalent only if you are not able to achieve the learning outcomes of the intermediate trauma module. However, ATLS (or preferably something better!) does help meet the learning outcomes considerably….
Case numbers / exposure
There won’t be a case number target – I’ll look at the core learning outcomes for each module and take into account complexity, range and supervision of cases together with any other learning (courses, elearning, CPD etc).
The intermediate training block is probably the most challenging to achieve since trauma calls at RSUH are attended by RAC / Consultant – getting to trauma calls as St3/4 is difficult and I appreciate this. But there are opportunities and you will hopefully encounter these cases in the trauma units as well.
Advanced training
If anyone in intermediate / higher training has ambitions of attending trauma calls at 0200 well in to their middle age then please do get in contact with me and we can plan an advanced module

Shameless plug……
If you’re looking to do a quick bit of elearning can I suggest the doctors.net.uk module on immediate management of major trauma? I’m not paid per user!

Hope that’s helpful

Trainee Commendations
There have been a number of commendations given to trainees since the excellence awards went live.
Remember to reward those that have done an exemplary piece of work or simply gone the extra mile.
They deserve it!
CT2 Year ACCS- Anaesthetics Trainees to be Managed by the Core Anaesthesia TPD’s With Effect From Current Training Year August 2016
Dear ACCS Anaesthesia CT2 Trainees
With effect from the commencement date of your current CT2 year in ACCS- Anaesthetics (August 2016) it has been agreed amongst Dr Khalid Hasan (Chair of ACCS) and the Core Anaesthetic Training Programme Directors (TPDs) that your training will now be managed by the Core Anaesthesia TPDs.
In practice this will mean your Core Anaesthesia TPD will also assess you at ARCP. Should you have training queries that your Educational supervisor/College Tutors are unable to support you on, you will be able to then approach your Anaesthesia TPD for support. If you have any further queries in relation to this please contact your Core Anaesthesia TPD via email.
Your Core Trainee TPD is Dr. C.J. De Klerk email: chris.deklerk@sath.nhs.uk
